All about Rank Testing
What is Rank Testing?
Rank testing is when a Taekwondo student feels like they are ready to go to the next rank and start working on more advanced techniques and practices. It is a formal event where the student is placed in front of a panel of Black Belts and Instructors to determine if their skills are where they should be at a given rank.
How do I know if I'm ready for Testing?
As a beginner rank (White & Yellow Belts), you will need to have all 4 stripes on your belt before you are eligible to test. There are several things you will be tested on at different ranks, but as a beginner, you will be tested using your current form and one-steps. If you have all your stripes and feel you are ready for testing, talk to Master Evans to make sure you're ready.
Please refer to your Student Manual or the Rank Requirements booklet for more information about what is required at each rank.
What is Testing like?
Testing is a unique experience where a panel of Black Belts watch and judge you based on your rank and proficiency level. Their main job is to see if your skills are where they should be to learn and work on more skills. If the judging panel agrees that you should focus on your current skills longer, they will suggest you stay the same rank.
Testing is stressful. It is a time to be under pressure and see if you can still do what you need to under the stress. Nothing can fully prepare you for the pressure of a real self defense situation, but the confidence you get in yourself and your abilities will be greatly raised through conquering testing.
How do I sign up for Testing?
When you are ready for Testing, you will need to register. You can do this through Mr. or Mrs. Evans at the dojang or online through our website. Testing has a fee as you will receive a new belt, certificate, and you will be certified with the dojang and the organization as that rank.
If you do not pass testing, you will not have to repay for that testing as long as you test the next cycle.* You will already be signed up for the next Testing.
*If Master Evans suggests that you do not test, and you choose to do so anyway and fail, you will then have to pay the testing fee the next time you test.
What happens if I pass?
If you are successful at testing, you will get no call to let you know. You will just need to come to the Awards Ceremony the following week to be declared and receive your new rank. Your class totals will then start over and you will get to start adding new skills to your training.
What happens if I fail?
If you are unsuccessful at testing, you will receive a call well before Awards Ceremony to let you know. There is nothing that can prepare you for the feeling of failure, but it is a natural part of Taekwondo and life. Most of the Black Belts we have at our Dojang have not passed 1 or several testings. You will most definitely feel upset, and rightly so. You have worked hard to be successful and now are not.
Instead of looking at it as a failure, try to see it as it is. A refining moment in your character and life. Changing you into a stronger, more resilient person. Someone who has been unsuccessful is someone who learns what it's like to have to pick theirself back up and continue. Master Evans and your instructors will help guide you through the process and help you to work toward success.
